In 1978, Jorge and Ella Castillo presented to the Universidad Francisco Marroquín their extensive collection of pre-Columbian art, colonial art, and traditional Guatemalan dance costumes. Enriched with numerous donations, this collection has grown to form the Museo Popol Vuh, which offers the opportunity to enjoy one of the best samples of Guatemalan art and history. The exhibition includes numerous masterworks, representing the major stages of pre-Columbian cultural development in the country, the glory of Maya art, and a magnificent sample of Colonial art. Through a wide program of research and teaching, addressed to Guatemalan children and youths, the Museo Popol Vuh contributes to the conservation and understanding of Guatemala’s cultural heritage.

The seed that was planted by Jorge and Ella Castillo through their original donation has grown to produce rich results for the study and conservation of Guatemala’s art, history and archaeology. Our founders’ initiative has inspired numerous persons that find in the Museo Popol Vuh a safe repository, whose collections are preserved in optimal conditions for the service of research, while serving for educational purposes that are essential to ensure the long-term appreciation of our rich cultural heritage, and its preservation for generations to come. The donations received by the museum, large and small, perpetually honor the will of the donors, to whom the Museo Popol Vuh of the Universidad Francisco Marroquín extends its gratitude for their contribution to the fulfillment of our goals.
